The Seattle Seahawks joined the National Football League (NFL) in 1976 and have since established a losing record in the postseason, with 17 wins compared to 18 losses. However, the franchise has enjoyed considerable playoff success in recent years, reaching three Super Bowl games since 2005.
Seattle posted a 13-3 season in 2005, the best record in franchise history and only the fourth time the team logged double-digit wins. The Seahawks cruised through the opening rounds of the postseason, defeating the Washington Redskins and Carolina Panthers with a combined 30-point margin of victory. However, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense managed to disrupt the Seahawks’ offensive rhythm, winning Super Bowl XL by a score of 21-10.
Seattle reached the playoffs four times over the following seven seasons before reaching the Super Bowl for a second time. The 2013 Seahawks also finished the season with a 13-3 record. While Seattle’s road to Super Bowl XLVII was tougher, consisting of single-score victories over the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers, the Seahawks finished the season with a decisive 43-8 win over the Denver Broncos, resulting in the franchise’s first NFL championship.
The Seahawks were poised to repeat as Super Bowl champions in 2014 following a 12-4 regular season. However, an interception in the closing seconds of the game resulted in a 28-24 victory for the New England Patriots.
